The School of Music at Georgia Tech is located in the Couch Building. Among the oldest traditions at Tech, the School of Music began when the Glee Club was formed in 1906. In 2009, the Department of Music officially became the School of Music. Georgia Tech launched the Center for Music Technology in November 2008 with more than 20 researchers from the arts, sciences, and engineering. Several interdisciplinary projects are often demonstrated at various open house events and performances. Under the Couch (UTC) is a live music venue that found its start underneath the Couch building, but is currently located in the Student Center. In 2002, the Couch Building underwent a $650,000 renovation.
Honorary - Named in honor of J. Allen Couch for his service and support to the Institute.
J. Allen Couch was born in Dallas, Ga on January 10, 1888. J. Allen went on to become a prominent Atlanta citizen. Couch was a former 5th Ward Councilman. He served on the council as street car conductor and later was nominated for alderman.
